Project delivery, in plain words.
Short, practical definitions of the terms delivery teams use every day.
- Delivery confidence scoreA delivery confidence score is a number from 0 to 100 that shows how healthy a project's delivery is right now. It starts at 100 and drops as specific problems are detected, such as overdue work, blocked dependencies or stalled reviews, and each drop names the work items behind it.Read more
- Project health scoreA project health score is a single number or status (often green, amber or red) that summarises whether a project is on track. Good health scores are computed from the project's own data, such as overdue work, blockers and stalled reviews, rather than set by hand, and they show which issues caused the current value.Read more
- Scope creepScope creep is work that gets added to a project after the scope was agreed, without a matching change to the deadline, budget or price. It usually arrives as small, reasonable-sounding requests, and for agencies it is often discovered only at invoicing, when the extra hours can no longer be billed.Read more
- Project risk managementProject risk management is the practice of identifying what could stop a project from landing on time and on budget, tracking those risks as the work progresses, and acting on them early. In delivery teams it works best when risks are detected from the work itself, such as overdue, blocked or stalled items, rather than listed once in a register and forgotten.Read more
- Client portalA client portal is a private online space where a client can see the work being done for them, such as project progress, updates, files and items waiting for approval, without being given access to the team's internal tools. It replaces status emails and shared spreadsheets with one place both sides can point at.Read more
- Scope of work (SOW)A scope of work is the part of an agreement that describes exactly what will be done on a project: the tasks, the deliverables, the timeline and what is not included. A statement of work (SOW) is the full contract document around it, which also carries acceptance criteria and payment terms.Read more
- Project scope statementA project scope statement is a short document that records what a project will deliver, how each deliverable will be accepted, and what is deliberately left out. It is the reference the team and the client use to decide whether a new request is part of the project or a change to it.Read more
- Burndown vs burnup chartA burndown chart shows how much work is left in a sprint or project, falling towards zero over time. A burnup chart shows how much work has been completed, rising towards a line that marks the total scope. The burnup makes scope changes visible, because the total line moves when work is added.Read more
- Project baselineA project baseline is the approved version of a project's plan, fixed at the start, that actual progress is measured against. It normally covers scope, schedule and cost, and the three together are called the performance measurement baseline.Read more
- Project controlsProject controls are the processes a team uses to compare a project's actual progress with its plan and to correct course early. They are commonly grouped into five areas: scope, schedule, cost, quality and risk.Read more
- Project KPIsProject KPIs (key performance indicators), also called project management KPIs, are the small set of numbers a team tracks to see whether a project is being delivered as planned. The most useful ones cover schedule, budget, scope, quality and how the team's time is used.Read more
- PSA softwarePSA software, short for professional services automation software, is a system that runs a services business end to end: the sales pipeline, quotes, projects, resource planning, time tracking, billing and financial reporting. It is used by agencies, consultancies and IT services firms that sell their people's time.Read more
